Cataract Surgery

Cataracts often become a problem as people age. Patients may experience blurriness or fuzziness in their vision when cataracts develop. Vision impairment may only be improved with cataract surgery.

Symptoms

Besides being fuzzy and blurry, your vision may also become filmy. Other common symptoms of cataracts include problems with night vision, and glares or halos around lights, particularly street lamps. Additionally, you may have double vision or lose the ability to recognize certain colors, particularly different shades of blue.

Causes

The most common cause of cataracts is age. Other common causes include diabetes and family history. If your parents have cataracts, you may also have the same problem later. Some types of medication may also cause cataracts. Heavy drinking and smoking is another common cause.

How the Surgery Works

Once your cataracts have worsened to the point of extremely limiting vision, your doctor may suggest cataract surgery. In surgery, the surgeon will remove the clouded eye lens and implant an IOL, or intraocular lens. Multifocal IOLs are most commonly used now so that both your near and far vision is improved.

Ideal Candidate

An ideal candidate for cataract surgery will have a refractive prescription that has remained the same for at least six months. They should also have an exam where cataracts were evident. In general, they should be in decent health so that they can take any antibiotics needed.

Choosing a Surgeon

Once you know that you need cataract surgery, your next goal is to find a great surgeon. Without the right help, your vision could worsen. Research online and ask for referrals from family and friends so that you can get the best care available.
